iPhone/iPod touch SDK

Whoo! Long time no update!

At last I've logged in to this, well, cob-webbed weblog, I had such a lot of things done lately that I am unaware of my online life... Got to do the updates...

I recently bought an iPod touch here in Cagayan (Php15,000) and to tell you it's quite amazing, that I often forget to bring my phone than the iPod. It's got a lot of it inside. it's got notepad, games, calendar, notes, and others... well i've jailbroken it. At least I get my hard earned money's worth.

March 6 (March 7 around 2-3 am phil. time) Apple released the official Software Development Kit. It opened a whole new world for the device, and a lot of possibilities. It can do 3d games, that you'll barely notice it's a phone while you're playing a game. It's so nice that it made me think of a near end of jailbreak history (at least for the iPod touch). Well, i was wrong.

Apple promises to release "Firmware 2.0" by June 2008, and this includes a new iPhone application called "AppStore". This will be mainly the source of all applications, may it be free or for sale. As usual, Apple will screen all the programs for the iPhone. Typical Apple way.

Then I was strangled by Steve Jobs' announcement. Firmware 2.0 will be available as a free update to iPhone, but will be available at a NOMINAL FEE for the iPod touch. Oh crap.

Apple is quite obviously putting down iPod touch owners. I really believe on the notion that iPod touch sells more than iPhone. Why wouldn't it? Of course, the world loves the iPod. It's a basic simple fact. Everybody is willing to buy one (given the budget of course). And since the iPhone is not yet on sale on other parts of the world (specifically here in the Philippines), this leaves the people with only one option which is the iTouch.

Now seriously, about the software update. Everybody says that its not that expensive to update the software. $20 is not too big. In the US, maybe. In the Philippines, it is around Php800.00. That's a lot of money here. Oh well maybe we can settle for the 800, now where can we purchase it if there's no iTunes store in the Philippines?

No offense to Apple, I love Apple and their products. But there are just some things that I cannot agree upon. I just hope "Nominal" won't quite expensive. We all want apps, we're hungry for them. I also hope AppStore will be free. Exchange support maybe sold, after all it's enterprise software. Otherwise if this will still be for sale, then the people (specially not-so-rich ones) will have no option but to jailbreak.

Umm... iPod touch opensource software? Maybe in the next few years. I hope. I just hope.

Imagine a Perspective OS

You sit on your computer and turn it on. After logging in, you are greeted by a friendly cartoon character saying "Welcome! How are you today? Here are your computing stuff..." Then there are some colorful boxes that pop up and glide across your screen, each containing important items. But you notice that they are not labelled the way it was supposed to be... it was labeled the way you wanted it! Task lists are labeled "Mah werkz," Activity organizers are labeled "Mah activities," and so on.

So you click your "Paperwerkz" box, and then the cartoon character says to you "What item do you want to open?" You are about to type a word, but decided to talk to the character. You told her "Please open my paper on Research." She responds, "I found three papers on Research. Which would you like to open?" A list of three related papers appear on your screen. You respond, "the paper for Mr. Sanchez." Then she responds, "Ok. Geez! Your paper is larger than I thought! It might take more than 10 seconds to open this one."

After 10 seconds, she says "Hey! your paper is ready! Just tell me if you're ready to print it."
So you do the encoding, but stopped at one word. You forgot the spelling. You ask her, "Is this word spelled correctly?" She says, "I'll check the internet. Do you mean 'Crème brûlée?'"
"Yes! it is!"
"Should I spell it with or without the French punctuations?"
"With French please."
So your document was corrected, and you continue encoding.
All of a sudden, a call came. It was your teacher, telling you to submit your work hora mismo. So you told the cartoon, "Please print this document now!"
"Ok."
You forgot that a friend needed a copy of your document for reference. You told the character "Send the document to Margie."
"Ok. What's the mail subject?"
"Your pick."
"Ok. Do you want to add a message?"
"No."
"Ok. I just sent it."

After cleaning yourself, you decided to bring the printed documents toyour teacher. You told the character,"I'll leave you for a moment. Please sleep for a while, I'll be back. If after two hours I'm not back, please save all my works and turn yourself off."
"Ok. Should I tell others that you left?"
"Yes please."
"Where will you go?"
"To school to pass my work."
"Ok. Bye."

When you leave, your brother arrived.
"Your brother left the house and went to school to pass his work. Will you use the computer?"
"No, ill be doing something."
"Ok."

After three hours, you went back and found your computer turned off.
